چکیده

Bud exudates from 9 poplars showing a range o f resistance to bacterial canker and poplar rust were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the components o f the bud exudate identified. Those compounds previously reported in the literature to have notable antimicrobial activity were listed and the quantities present in the bud exudates o f the speci mens analyzed were compared. N o correlation was observed between the amounts o f these compounds and the known resistance o f the poplars to bacterial canker or rusts.

Identification by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry of 150 Compounds in Propolis

Propolis is the substance used by bees as a draught excluder and general purpose sealer for their hives. It usually consists of a mixture of pop lar bud exudate and beeswax [1]. Propolis balsam (a 70% alcohol extract of propolis which contains the bud exudate components) is a popular herbal medicine [2-4] containing a number of phenolic constituents with antimicrobial activity [4-6], Bees appe...

Composition of Propolis in Oxfordshire, U.K. and its Relation to Poplar Bud Exudate

Propolis is a mixture of wax, sugars and plant exudates used by bees as a general purpose glue and sealant within hives. There is a long history of medicinal usage of propolis although propolis can cause allergic reactions in susceptible individuals [1, 2]. Various components of propolis have been assessed for their antimicrobial properties [3—7], Components identified as having antimicrobial p...

Expression of the Arabidopsis mutant ABI1 gene alters abscisic acid sensitivity, stomatal development, and growth morphology in gray poplars.

The consequences of altered abscisic acid (ABA) sensitivity in gray poplar (Populus x canescens [Ait.] Sm.) development were examined by ectopic expression of the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) mutant abi1 (for abscisic acid insensitive1) gene. The expression resulted in an ABA-insensitive phenotype revealed by a strong tendency of abi1 poplars to wilt, impaired responsiveness of their stom...

Ectomycorrhizal Colonization and Diversity in Relation to Tree Biomass and Nutrition in a Plantation of Transgenic Poplars with Modified Lignin Biosynthesis

Wood from biomass plantations with fast growing tree species such as poplars can be used as an alternative feedstock for production of biofuels. To facilitate utilization of lignocellulose for saccharification, transgenic poplars with modified or reduced lignin contents may be useful. However, the potential impact of poplars modified in the lignification pathway on ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi, w...

The Poplar-Poplar Rust Interaction: Insights from Genomics and Transcriptomics

Poplars are extensively cultivated worldwide, and their susceptibility to the leaf rust fungus Melampsora larici-populina leads to considerable damages in plantations. Despite a good knowledge of the poplar rust life cycle, and particularly the epidemics on poplar, the perennial status of the plant host and the obligate biotrophic lifestyle of the rust fungus are bottlenecks for molecular inves...
